Our family vacation began with a trip to the Wisconsin Dells for one night, where we spent a day and a half at the Kalahari Indoor/Outdoor Waterpark. We all had a great time riding water slides. One of the coolest rides was an indoor surfing area. We had fun laughing at each other wipe out! In the evening, we went out for pizza at Moosejaw Pizza where we had some amazing taco pizza. We capped off the evening with Go Carts. Kaylee was the only one old enough to ride by herself and she was terrified. I think she ended up in last place, she was so cautious. The look of sheer terror on her face, still makes me laugh...
After leaving the Wisconsin Dells, we drove to Door County, Wisconsin, where we spent the rest of the week. We stayed in Egg Harbor, a small town of about 200 people. It was right on Green Bay, so had some amazing sunsets. Door County is made up of a lot of really tiny towns. They have some fun little shops and some yummy restaurants. It happened to be the start of cherry season while we were there, so there was no shortage of sampling cherry jelly, cherry pie, cherry streusel, cherry salsa, etc., You get the point...
We spent our first day at the Peninsula State Park hiking and catching some rays. We had a fun time on our hike and saw some cool rock formations. The beach wasn't quite up to our snooty Lake Michigan standards. The beach was small, crowded, dirty and had no waves. My highlight was kayaking with Kaylee along the shore for an hour. It was one of those delightful moments when you realize your kids are getting old enough to enjoy some of the same hobbies you enjoy. It was a special time with my lovely daughter.
Our second day, we decided to check out the Lake Michigan side of Door County by visiting Whitefish Dunes State Park. We hiked in the morning along a nice path and then spent the afternoon at the beach. It was refreshing being back on the Lake Michigan side. We enjoyed the amazing views, the white sand beaches, the cold water and the waves. The kids had a blast practicing their surfing moves on the their boogie boards. They were fun to watch.
Our third day, we took a break from hiking and went out for breakfast at the Al Johnson Swedish Restaurant. This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend and did not disappoint. The food was delicious, but the highlight was seeing the goats on top of the thatched roof when the meal was over. They were so fun to see, one was even pregnant. Afterwards, we did some shopping and spent the day by the hotel pool. It was quite relaxing.
Our fourth day, we hiked at Cave Point County Park, which seriously reminded me of some of our hikes in Hawaii. It was that pretty! Kaylee was in awe and said it was probably the prettiest place she had ever been. The hike was right along Lake Michigan. The shore line was filled with cliffs. The waves crashing again the rocks formed caves. It was so beautiful. The only bad thing were the biting flies. They were driving us batty, but otherwise it was splendid. We went back to the Whitefish Dunes beach and had a relaxing afternoon. We visited the Schopf's Hilltop Dairy for some ice cream on the way home. The coolest part was being able to watch the cows get milked while eating the ice cream. The evening ended with a double feature at the Skyway Drive-In Movie Theater. We watched "The Secret Life of Pets", followed by "Tarzan". We had popcorn and candy for dinner. It was a good night, a night to remember.
We enjoyed our time in the Wisconsin Dells and in Door County. It was a fun time together as a family. We are truly blessed!
